Mentor Toan Van's Story

Over the past six months, I’ve had the opportunity to take on the role of a mentor for the first time for the SAL Scholarship Program. Honestly, when I began this journey, I wasn’t confident that I could do it. There were moments when I questioned myself, how could I guide someone else when I sometimes struggle to solve my own problems in life? Luckily, Ms. Tran (CSR) encouraged me and gave me the confidence to try.

Instead of seeing myself as a “mentor,” I saw myself as an older sister, someone sharing experiences to help my mentee make her own choices. What surprised me was how much I learned in return. I gained insights into Gen Z, their thinking, their trends, and even learned fun facts about Chinese culture, since she’s studying the language. Of course, we didn’t always agree or have all the answers, but that’s part of the journey. We talked, shared perspectives, and learned from each other. I believe listening and respect matter more than being right.

I often reminded my mentee how lucky she is to be part of the SAL family. This is a place to grow, learn, and prepare for the future. I hope she keeps trying her best and remembers the support around her.
In the end, I’ve learned that being a mentor isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about walking alongside someone, learning together, and growing together. I’m truly grateful for this experience, it has taught me not only more about others, but also more about myself.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
